New Home

The drive from Brenham took two days. Shortly after getting underway, I was in a rain storm. It slowed me down a little but at least it got the bugs off the windshield. In Louisiana, while driving over a bridge I saw a gator lunge out of the water to snag a bird and then disappear in the blink of an eye. That's the kind of thing I only expected to see in a nature show.

I made it to Mobile, Alabama and crashed at the Battleship Inn. I felt safe being guarded by the Battleship Alabama and those big guns at the entrance. I would have had some pictures of some aircraft but when I started across the grass to get a good angle for the pictures I found myself as the main course in an all-you-can-eat buffet for mosquitos. I'm sure the people eating breakfast at the restaurant were amused to see me swatting at the bugs and sprinting back to my car. Well, you've all seen fighter jets before so use your imagination.

The drive across I 10 all the way to Lake City, FL was fast paced and had plenty of trees, rivers, birds and animals to see along the way. South from Lake City on I 75 was good drive, too, until road construction at Tampa. Even that couldn't dampen my enthusiasm for getting home. I had a studid grin I couldn't wipe off my face that last hundred miles to North Port. I stopped in Venice, the last town before North Port and picked up flowers and a card for Raquel. I got back on the road and followed Raquel's directions to our place.

The family was expecting me on Friday so when I pulled into our complex and I saw Erik, he did a double and then a triple take before realizing it was me. After a quick hug he pointed out our building and went back to playing with his friends. I parked and headed up to apartment with the flowers, card and my camera. Marissa answered the door and screamed for Mom who was back in a bedroom on the phone. Raquel came out and was surprised. There were hugs all around. It is good to be home.

Raquel was so excited to see me she broke out the ironing board and started on my work shirts. I think she's trying to tell me my vacation is over.
